WAU Men's Basketball Shock Ambassadors With a 71-62 Homecoming Victory
TAKOMA PARK, MD - The Washington Adventist Men's Basketball team had an exhilarating Homecoming match against Oakwood University, and they emerged victorious with a hard-fought win. The atmosphere at Takoma Academy was electric as the team achieved an impressive final score of 71-62.
From the beginning, both teams sprinted up and down the court, competing fiercely for an early advantage. The Ambassadors came out hot, shooting 50% from the field and forcing the Shock into ten turnovers in the first half, resulting in the 37-34 Oakwood advantage at halftime.
Despite the aggressive defense from the Ambassadors, the Shock remained composed and showed incredible resilience. Led by senior forward Mohamed Bundu and sophomore center Xzavaier Hawkins, the Shock's offense came alive with efficient scoring and controlling the boards, combining for 38 points and 24 rebounds on the night.
In the second half, Oakwood fought to maintain their advantage, but the Shock took the lead with 16 minutes left in the game and never looked back. Bundu and Hawkins utilized their height advantage to secure crucial rebounds and convert them into second-chance points.
As time ran out on the clock, it became evident that WAU's exceptional teamwork was paying off. Their superb passing and court vision led to open shots while thwarting any comeback attempts from Oakwood. The crowd erupted in thunderous applause as the home team celebrated an impressive 71-62 victory, ending a triumphant Homecoming event.
Head coach Jerry McFarland couldn't have been prouder of his team's performance after the game. He emphasized their mental toughness and adaptability: "The energy in the gym was terrific. I really appreciate all of the fans, faculty, and students that came out," said McFarland. "Oakwood does a great job of playing hard and taking you out of what you want to do. I knew this would be a tough game right after the St. Thomas game when I scheduled it. I hope this makes us more prepared for the season ahead."
The Shock finished with two starters recording double-doubles and nine players in the scoring column.
This victory against Oakwood will undoubtedly serve as a catalyst for future matches. The team will carry this incredible momentum forward, fueling their aspirations for a successful campaign. Fans and supporters eagerly await more thrilling performances from this immensely talented squad as they continue to strive for greatness on the court.
"Mo and Xzaviaier really carried us on a night when our guards struggled a bit, but that's what champions do," said Coach McFarland, "They step up when they see it's Go Time! I respect Coach Jacobs and what he has done at Oakwood. I know they are going to have a successful season. You can really see it in how hard they play."
