TAKOMA PARK, MD – In a stunning display of skill and teamwork, WAU men's soccer delivered an emphatic 7-0 victory against Bluefield University (0-1, 0-0) on August 23, 2023. The match showcased the Shock's exceptional talent, determination, and strategic prowess, setting the tone for the season with their dominant performance.

A Dominant Display

From the opening whistle, it was evident that WAU (1-0, 0-0) was determined to make a statement. The team's relentless offensive pressure and impeccable ball control left Bluefield University struggling to gain any foothold in the match. The Shock showcased their technical abilities, combining precise passing with swift movement to create seven scoring opportunities while holding the Rams scoreless.

First Half Blitz

The Shock wasted no time asserting their dominance, scoring three goals within the first twenty minutes of the match. The team's attacking duo, led by senior Aguer Dau, who scored in the second minute of the game, and freshman George Tidmarsh, wreaked havoc on Bluefield's defense, exploiting gaps and capitalizing on every opportunity. Tidmarsh's exceptional speed and clinical finishing were on display as he netted two goals quickly. Freshman Bartu Yakkan scored the last goal of the first half, assisted by Stanley Pagget, to give the Shock a 4-0 advantage at halftime.

Freshman Aidan Hidassy played a pivotal role in the team's success. Tidmarsh's vision and ability to control the game's tempo allowed the Shock to maintain possession and launch waves of attacks. With the help of his partners, Hidassy provided crucial assists to set up his teammates for scoring opportunities in his season debut.

Solid Defensive Line

While the offense stole the show, the Shock's rock-solid defense must also be given credit. The backline, marshaled by goalkeeper Gregorio Capponi, thwarted every Bluefield attack with precision and composure. Capponi's exceptional shot-stopping skills and commanding presence in the box ensured the Rams were denied any chance of a comeback.

Second Half Domination

The second half saw WAU continue their relentless pursuit of goals. The team's substitutions injected fresh energy into the game, maintaining the high tempo and intensity. The Rams struggled to cope with the constant pressure, and the Shock capitalized on their fatigue with an early goal by David Rowe at the 64:25 minute mark, assisted by Tidmarsh.

The final six minutes of the match showcased the Shock's depth and versatility as they scored two more goals. The team's ability to seamlessly transition from defense to attack and exploit Bluefield's vulnerabilities was a testament to their exceptional teamwork and understanding of the game. Tidmarsh closed the night, scoring the last two of his four goals to give the Shock the 7-0 victory over the Rams.
