WAU Falls to Goldey-Beacom in Season Opener

WILMINGTON, DE The WAU Softball team dropped both games on the season-opening double-header hosted by Goldey-Beacom College Wednesday evening at Jackson Athletic Complex.

WAU 2, GOLDEY BEACOM 10 (5 innings)

The Lightning started the first meeting with the Shock with momentum.

With WAU batting first, the Shock quickly picked up three outs with only four batters coming to the plate. Then, Goldey-Beacom went on a 4-0 run, setting the tone for the night heading into the third inning.

The Shock found its stride at the top of the third inning by capitalizing on a few of the Lightning's errors. Junior Eryn Scott was hit by the pitcher, stole second base, and senior Annabelle Estrada was walked. With two on base, senior Infinity Chacon singled to left field, advancing Estrada to second and Scott to cross home plate, giving the Shock their first score.

However, the Lightning did not let up. Goldey-Beacom continued to apply pressure, going on a 5-0 run, giving them the 9-1 advantage heading into the fifth inning.

At the top of the fifth, Chacon found herself in a familiar scenario as she approached the plate with two on base. After a successful bunt, Mia Garcia advanced to second and was tagged heading to third as Estrada crossed home plate to score another Shock point.

However, the Shock struggled to gain consistent momentum. Play in game one ended in the bottom of the fifth after Goldey-Beacom drilled a ball past second base to record the final Lightning point, ending the game with a 10-2 victory over the Shock.

WAU 1, GOLDEY BEACOM 13 (5 innings)

WAU looked to bounce back in game two of the evening but fell short after Goldey-Beacom took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning.

A single to right center by sophomore Dreyana Hinton allowed Chacon to cross home plate, giving the Shock its only point of the game.

The Lightning dominated the final innings, going on a 9-0 run to close the night with a 13-1 victory over the Shock.
